Depends on where you're going: summer is good weatherwise, but count on midges - bit like a tiny mosquito that bites something fierce - from June til September in the west and north of Scotland.
Also, accommodation prices double in Edinburgh during the tourist season, particularly during the festival in August. Then again, the festival is amazing.
I also like winter, particularly Hogmanay.

All year round, anytime of the year is the best time to visit scotland, we are friendly folk, and have some of the most beautiful countryside in the World.

I like the Fall or Spring. The weather isn't as good as summer, but the airline rates are cheaper and there are fewer tourists.

Summertime - it's pretty harsh in the Winter. Late Spring and Early fall would be my second choice.
