AA fly direct from Chicago to Glasgow from 2nd May till 30th September with a Boeing 763. From Glasgow you can either get the train to Edinburgh or the bus. Train will take about 40 mins to 1 hour, bus about 1 hour.
Also Continental fly daily from New York Newark direct to Edinburgh, and from 4th May they up the frequency to 11 flights per week. You will obviously have to get from Chicago to Newark first though.
Alternatively, you can fly from Chicago to London Heathrow daily with a number of operators or fly to London Gatwick between 8th June and 31st August with Delta. From London there are alot of flights to Edinburgh.
I have used flights.com more than most sites in the past but you should shop around for the best deal. Sometimes travel agents get you better deals than you get online.

I traveled from Boston, but here's what worked for me:
Iceland Air with a layover in Keflavic (you get to stretch your legs and say you've been to another country!), then on to Glasgow. I took the public train (very safe and comfy) to Edinburgh from there, which was about half an hour. The train station is on Princes St., right in the middle of everything. Bon Voyage!

Check out sidestep.com. It allows you to search for the cheapest flight on many other sites simultaneously (sites like Travelocity, Expedia, Orbitz, the airline sites, etc.). It does not cover Hotwire, so search that one separately. Good luck!

Rowing boat, what a blast that was. You have to be able to stay awake for long periods though.
