I'm 18 (female) and come from Jersey, C.I.
I want to up sticks and move to Edinburgh - Is it a nice place to live?
Would anybody recommend moving here with no family and no friends in the city?
Where should I go? What should I look out for? Are there good job opportunities?

Yes, it is a great place to live with plenty to do. However, job opportunities are not great here any more than throughout the rest of the UK. If you know nobody in the city, your best bet would be a flat share to make some friends and once you do start work you will be able to build a social circle through there.

Good luck!

Yes Edinburgh is a nice place to live. It will remind of Jersey in a way. It is a big village.

Many people from, how should put it, the lower orders of society, dislike Edinburgh because they feel that the people are posh. It is just that the Edim-bourgeois are over educated, too clever by half. A bit like people from the Channel Islands. You know the negative attitude. " The Septic Isles" and so on!

Andrew is from Glasgow as his horribly aggressive avatar reflects. The anti Edinburgh thing is just jealousy reflecting Edinburgh's over-riding superiority over any other Scottish city. (except Aberdeen). Even the Glasgow Labour party chose Edinburgh as the city to build their stupid Spanish designed industrial parliament building.

Edinburgh people are really friendly.

Were to go? Just avoid the housing schemes. Some are rough.

What to look out for? Just avoid the drug scene.

Jobs? Well Edinburgh is really difficult. The locals are highly educated. There is serious competition.

Hi,

I've never moved to a new city before, so I have no idea how it would feel, but I moved to Edinburgh with my boyfriend nearly 5 years ago (but not from very far away!) I like living here, but the questions you ask are quite hard to answer!! Friends - well, Edinburgh's got lots of communities in it, but you have to be prepared to get out there and make friends. Where should you go? Well, it depends on what you like. Newington is the best place if you are studying - the old town is quite studenty, and the New Town is more suited for professionals or some better-off student types. George Street is the main cocktail/club street with more upmarket bars etc and again the Old Town has some more 'atmospheric' and often themed bars/pubs. As for job opportunities, if you are intelligent, reasonably well educated and prepared to work hard then there are always opportunities.

I hope this helps, but feel free to contact me if you want any more help - i'll do my best!

Good luck!!

Edinburg justifies some time of your lifetime to learn it and here is the place to begin hotelbye . Among the places where you will have an excellent day trip with the family could be the Edinburgh Zoo. This zoo is the house to over 1,000 fabulous creatures, including the UK's just massive pandas. The Zoo is situated in beautiful parkland adjustments and contains wonderful flamingos, cute koalas and cheeky chimpanzees. Edinburg is not only any city; Edinburg is the town to pay your household holyday, a holyday that will never be forgotten.

Well it keeps winning awards like best city in Britain for quality of life and so on so I guess it must be (see the link below for an example)!

It is quite a good place to move to with no friends or family because there are a lot of people there in a similar situation. I moved there shortly after graduating and worked with people from all over the UK who were in the same position - looking for new friends etc.

As far as job opportunities go, it's got one of the better economies in the UK with higher than average wages, but consequently also higher rents etc.

(That said, I moved back to Glasgow as soon as I could ;) )

Its a bit different to Jersey. For a provincial capital its extremely cosmopolitan. Edinburgh is a beautiful and vibrant city (i.e. feckin busy!). Accommodation is expensive but abundant. Like the rest of the UK Edinburgh is in recession, a double whammy for auld reekie as it is the HQ home to many banks and financial institutions who have been shedding staff. Consequently professional jobs are few however there are always hospitality / tourist jobs around especially if you know how to pull a pint.

Im Scottish an i dont really like Edinburgh, i worked and lived there for a short time and i found the people "stuck up" and posh ...However they might have just been that way with me cause i have a west coast accent and theres that whole East V West thing in Scotland, you might get on better with the people cause Scottish people are friendlier to foreigners than we are with each other lol.
